Single Elimination

The fastest way to crown a champion

Single elimination is the most widely used tournament format. Each match is do-or-die: the winner advances and the loser is eliminated. It's simple to organize, easy for players to follow, and produces a clear champion in the fewest possible matches.

N − 1 total matches

How it works

  1. 1 Players are placed into a bracket and optionally seeded so top players don't meet early
  2. 2 Each round, players face off head-to-head — the winner advances, the loser is out
  3. 3 If the player count isn't a power of 2, some players receive first-round byes
  4. 4 Rounds continue (quarterfinals, semifinals, final) until one undefeated player remains

Best for

  • Tournaments with limited court time or a tight schedule
  • Large fields (16+ players) where a full round robin isn't practical
  • Events where everyone understands the format — it's the most familiar bracket type

Things to consider

  • A single off day can knock out a strong player — no second chances
  • Proper seeding is important to avoid top players meeting in early rounds
  • Lower-ranked players may only get one match if they lose in the first round

Frequently asked questions

How do byes work in single elimination?

When the number of players isn't a power of 2 (like 4, 8, 16, or 32), some players receive a first-round bye — they skip the first round and advance automatically. Byes are typically given to the highest-seeded players.

How many matches are in a single elimination tournament?

Always one fewer than the number of players: N − 1. So an 8-player bracket has 7 matches, a 16-player bracket has 15, and a 32-player bracket has 31.

What is seeding in a bracket?

Seeding ranks players so the strongest competitors are placed on opposite sides of the bracket and don't meet until later rounds. The #1 seed plays the lowest seed, #2 plays the second-lowest, and so on.
