Compass Draw
Multiple matches for every player, win or lose
The compass draw is a format designed specifically for tennis. It starts like single elimination, but after each round, losing players move into consolation brackets named after compass directions. Every player is guaranteed at least 2 matches regardless of results. A full 8-player draw gives everyone 3 matches across 4 directions (East, West, North, South); a full 16-player draw expands to 8 directions (adding Southeast, Northeast, Southwest, Northwest) and gives everyone 4. Other field sizes are filled out with a back-draw so nobody is done after a single loss. Run it with 8 or 16 players for the cleanest schedule.
How it works
- 1 The main draw (East bracket) begins as standard single elimination
- 2 After each round, losers move to a new compass direction bracket
- 3 Every player continues playing until they complete their bracket's final
- 4 Exactly 8 players: 4 brackets (E/W/N/S), 3 matches per player, 12 total
- 5 Exactly 16 players: 8 brackets (E/W/N/S/SE/NE/SW/NW), 4 matches per player, 32 total
- 6 Other counts (5–7, 9–15): a back-draw guarantees everyone at least 2 matches
Best for
- Tennis tournaments (it's a tennis-specific format rarely used in other sports)
- Junior and developmental events where match experience matters
- Club tournaments with 5–16 players and enough courts for multiple brackets
Things to consider
- More complex to organize and explain than standard elimination
- Requires careful scheduling since consolation brackets depend on main draw results
- Works best with 8 or 16 players (powers of 2) to minimize byes
Frequently asked questions
What is a compass draw in tennis?
A compass draw is a tournament format where losing players drop into consolation brackets named after compass directions (East, West, North, South, etc.) instead of being eliminated. Every player is guaranteed at least 2 matches regardless of results.
How many matches does each player get in a compass draw?
A full 8-player draw gives each player 3 matches across 4 brackets, and a full 16-player draw gives each player 4 matches across 8 brackets. Other field sizes are guaranteed at least 2 matches each via a back-draw. For the cleanest schedule, run it with exactly 8 or 16 players.
How many players do you need for a compass draw?
A compass draw works with 5–16 players. The ideal sizes are 8 players (4 brackets, 12 total matches) or 16 players (8 brackets, 32 total matches). Non-power-of-2 counts work but require byes.
