Double Elimination
Everyone gets a second chance
Double elimination gives every player a safety net. You must lose twice to be knocked out. The tournament runs two parallel brackets — a winners bracket and a losers bracket — converging in a grand final. It takes more matches than single elimination but produces a more reliable result.
How it works
- 1 All players start in the winners bracket, seeded as in single elimination
- 2 Lose in the winners bracket and you drop to the losers bracket for a second chance
- 3 Lose in the losers bracket and you're eliminated — two losses total
- 4 The winners bracket champion faces the losers bracket champion in the grand final
- 5 If the losers bracket champion wins the grand final, a reset match is played
Best for
- Competitive tournaments where one upset shouldn't decide everything
- Events with enough time and courts to support roughly twice the matches
- Players who want a guaranteed minimum of two matches
Things to consider
- Requires about twice as many matches as single elimination
- The bracket structure is more complex to track and explain
- Scheduling can be tricky since the losers bracket depends on winners bracket results
Frequently asked questions
What is the losers bracket?
The losers bracket is a parallel bracket for players who lose in the winners bracket. Instead of being eliminated after one loss, they drop to the losers bracket and keep competing. A second loss eliminates them for good.
What is a grand final reset?
In the grand final, the winners bracket champion faces the losers bracket champion. If the losers bracket champion wins, a reset match is played because the winners bracket champion has only lost once — both players need two losses to be eliminated.
How many total matches in double elimination?
Between 2N − 2 and 2N − 1 matches, where N is the number of players. An 8-player tournament has 14 or 15 matches depending on whether a grand final reset is needed.
